Color Club Enchanted Holiday Collection Winter/Holiday 2010

Christmas polish posting continues with the latest from Color Club. Enchanted Holiday is a set of four mini (but still good size- .25 oz- half size!) Color Club shades plus a sheet of adorable Christmas decals which sadly I don't have a picture of. The kit is accompanied by a little set of holiday gems for nail art- little stars and beads and jewels. Which, if I wasn't in a complete creative slump, I could totally use to do some cute Christmas nail art. Actually, I have one idea for a design, I might just have to give it a try.... Anyway, the polishes!

Enchanted Holiday. Gold glitter in a clear base. Bright and shiny!

Magic Elf. This color is AMAZING. Look at it! It's insane! Light green and dark green tones with tons of iridescent gold sparkles. It's almost a foil it's so sparkly, but it doesn't have a metallic silver base like most foils. Just super shiny sparkly crazy green and gold. Now, the rest of the colors in this collection appear to be re=promoted Color Club shades, but I can't say I've seen this one before. Wonder if it will ever be released in full size?

Snowflakes. A light opalescent glitter in a slightly shimmery milky sheer base. Great for layering but it will lighten the color you layer it over because of the clear/whitish shimmer in the base. Looks nice alone, but I should have done three coats instead of two. Reminds me a bit of China Glaze Glacier.

Wish List Red. Obligatory Christmas/Holiday collection Ruby Pumps clone. Not that that's a bad thing because the color is gorgeous. Fiery red glitter in a candy red jelly base. Really can't go wrong with this color.

As usual, the formula was great. Not too thick, not too thin, applied easily. Color Club minis do have a small brush but it seems to hold a decent amount of polish and doesn't give me much trouble. I do like that color club minis are .25 fl oz- a full size is usually .5 fl oz- sometimes minis are smaller than half size which can make them harder to use and you get less polish. Drying time on these shades is good. Enchanted Holiday and Snowflakes are definitely on the gritty side and will need a little extra topcoat to smooth.

Cute set, I love the decals! Hopefully I'll be able to do something cute with them soon and post it. While we have seen three out of the four shades in this set, I think it's totally worth getting for Magic Elf alone. Now I'm starting to worry about having to ration my mini bottle of Magic Elf... Really hope I can get that in full size soon!

(These were sent to me for review.)

Taaraautomaat

Playing with Fyrinnae Futuristic Glamrock

I have this thing about blue... I'm sure I've mentioned it before. I probably mention it every time the topic of blue eyeshadow comes up. I just have a hard time wearing blue eyeshadow. But then there was Futuristic Glamrock. Futuristic Glamrock changed everything.

This was my first time using it as a main color:

My skin always looks so orange and red with the flash... But, these were taken at night and natural light wasn't an option.

This was:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Fyrinnae Futuristic Glamrock wet on lid
Black shadow in crease (can't remember which, may have been Stila Ebony.)
Fyrinnae Bifrost on lower lash line
Kat Von D Liquid Liner in Black Metal Love
Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara

I'm not sure if you can really tell from these pictures, but Futuristic Glamrock is made of tiny iridescent sparkles. It's mainly a light turquoise blue but it reflects a deeper blue at some angles and purple/pink at other angles. It's way prettier than I ever imagined it would be. I don't know why I waited so long to get it. Bifrost is also spectacular- yellow with subtle iridescent multicolored sparkles. For some reason this look reminds me of ska. One more thing worth mentioning: the cashier at the grocery store- who was actually in the next lane, not my cashier!- came over to tell me how crazy she was about my blue eyeshadow. She said she loved the color and had one sort of like it that was almost gone. I wish I could have talked to her longer about it but she had a lot of customers in line. This cashier usually compliments my nails and makeup... I bet she's one of us!

The next day I was feeling like I needed a little more color, so I tried this combination:

I think the purple shadow brings out the purple color shift in Futuristic Glamrock. You can see it a little in the first flash picture, in the shadowy area near the outer crease.

This was:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Fyrinnae Futuristic Glamrock wet on lid
Fyrinnae Danse Macabre wet in inner corner
Ben Nye Amethyst in crease and lower lashline
Fyrinnae Bifrost on lower lashline
Milani Eye Tech liner in Black
Cover Girl Lash Blast

I love Futuristic Glamrock and Danse Macabre together! They're both duochromey-iridescent and they totally play off of each other. I need a full size Danse Macabre, it's so freakin' gorgeous. Bright grassy green with yellow gold pearly duochrome. Super smooth and amazing pigment.

Now I have a question for Fyrinnae fans. Love Potion. What do I use it with? Every look I try to do with it ends up looking bland or just odd. I can never think of what to combine it with to make it shine. I need ideas for combos! I'm mystified by this color.

Cake Beauty Holiday Handful Hand Creme Trio - Limited Edition Holiday 2010

I finally got my hands on the Handful after that wacky Sephora disappearing act. Man, I'm so glad I got these. They rock.

My first experience with Cake Beauty products was the Milk Made hand creme / Cake Walk foot creme duo that I reviewed recently. The scent of Milk Made did not work for me at all, so I was still slightly concerned that I may not like these. The lure of vanilla scented hand lotion overpowered my wariness. Had to have it.

This set comes with three full-sized (3.4 oz) hand cremes in a really pretty shiny metallic box. It's so pretty. Would make an excellent gift. Actually, since this comes with three very pretty tubes of lotion, you could even split it up into three gifts. Who doesn't love hand creme in the wintertime?

Anyway, the scents included in this set are Vanilla Snow, which is exclusive to this set, Desserted Island (coconut vanilla) and It's A Slice (orange vanilla).

Vanilla Snow is the richest smelling of the three. It reminds me a bit of one of my other favorites- Jaqua Buttercream Frosting. Cake's Vanilla Snow is a more realistic vanilla scent, though. All the vanillas in this set remind me more of an actual vanilla bean than an artificial vanilla. Vanilla Snow is sweet but not excessively so. I was somewhat worried that this might be a bitter vanilla like L'Occitane vanilla shea hand creme or Bath and Body Works Vanilla Noir, but it's not the least bit bitter, dry or harsh. It's buttery and smooth. I must point out, in case you can't tell by the little picture up there, that the tube for Vanilla Snow has the most adorable pink snowflakes being carried off in a swirling pink breeze and it looks really nice against the soft blue text on the tube. I adore the design of the tube. I'm a sucker for nice packages. That last sentence is not intended to sound dirty. XD

Desserted Island (get it, desserted? Ha.) has the same smooth vanilla base as Vanilla Snow but it has overtones of beachy coconut. It's not a particularly sweet smell. Some coconut scents are very sweet and candy-like - think Bath and Body Works Coco Cabana- but Desserted Island is more of an unsweetened coconut, closer to Lavanila Vanilla Coconut. Very pleasant and cozy.

It's A Slice is supposed to be an orange creamsicle scent. I'm not much of a creamsicle fan so I was really pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this scent. Same vanilla base as the others but with a hint of orange to make the scent a little brighter. It has a distinct baked goods smell to me, like orange creme cake, or better yet, my mom's Knots (the cookie- also known as biscotti d'annodare). For a while I was really into "Orange Fluff Cake"-type etailer perfumes and this would layer really well with those. The orange scent in this isn't super fresh or sour/acidic, it's a soft candy orange.

All of these have that lovely light, velvety, quick-absorbing non-greasy formula that the Milk Made hand creme has. I really like the formula of Cake's hand cremes. It sinks right in without leaving your hands oily or sticky or slippery. It makes my hands so smooth and silky feeling. It's not the most deeply hydrating creme; if your hands are extremely dry you may need to apply twice in a row. However, I think this formula is pretty close to perfect, even if it isn't super heavy duty.

My one and only complaint with this set is the price. At $32 for three hand lotions, it's really not that good of a deal. They do retail for $16 individually, so it is like you're getting one free, but still. $16 for a 3.4oz hand creme is highway robbery. You can get an entire 8 ounce tube of Bath and Body Works Triple Moisture Body Creme for only $12, and those are always buy two get one free. The only hand creme I have that's more expensive than Cake is Lippmann Rich Girl (which rocks) at $23 for 3oz, but at least that has SPF 25. Then again, no one expects Lippmann to be reasonably priced. The formula is great and I like the scent, but I still think $16 per tube is too steep. That said, I would still buy the set again if I had the choice because it smells like cupcakes.

I'm really happy with these. I would totally recommend them to anyone. Great packaging, great vanilla scents, great formula. Just all around great. And no funky sharp chemical fake raspberry headache scent to be found! Thank goodness.

I got mine from Sephora.com- apparently the Cake Beauty line is online only. Pity, because I'd love to smell the rest of the scents in person sometime. Now that I know I like these I think I want to try one of their bath and body products next. That "baked lemon sugar" I keep reading about in the descriptions is calling my name.

Tarte Treasure Chest Limited Edition Palette Holiday 2009

So... I bought this during Sephora's Friends and Family last year and haven't posted it yet. There are a few reasons for that, one of which is that I was going to swatch all the colors individually but it seemed too big and daunting so I never got around to it.... Another reason is that I sorta forgot I had it until I pulled it out to use this week. Whoops...

Anyway, this is one of those 'Blockbuster' style palettes that tend to come out every year around Christmas. It has a large amount of product for a small price. After I used it for the first time, I realized why the price was so low, but let me post the pictures before I talk about the product:

Here's the front. I think it's pretty beautiful. A metallic silver pleather with large gems. Really does reinforce the 'treasure chest' theme. I like the box so much that I wish you could use it for other things, but sadly, you can't.

Flip open the top and you'll see the shimmer shadows, 16 of them:

From left to right starting at the top, you have: tan, brown, cranberry, black raspberry, dark burgundy with gold and silver glitter, light gold, deep smoky denim, medium aqua, pinky peach/gold duochrome, light rose, olive green, red-toned purple, smoky greenish-greyish taupe with glitter, periwinkle-lavender-gold duochrome, indigo and silver with glitter. All shimmer finishes. Really fantastic colors. A little washed out in my picture due to the lighting, though.

Flip open the side flaps to find the 16 matte shades:

Ivory, purple-taupe, light pink, warm blush brown, purple, camel, fuchsia, burgundy, peachy-pink, indigo, warm grey/taupe, white, reddish medium brown, neutral light brown, dark teal, deep grey. Again, a little washed out because of the lighting.

Then, underneath that there's a double-layer drawer that's constantly falling out which contains the glosses and the blushes.

Pull the drawer out fully to see the gloss:

Only halfway for the cheek items:

That's a lot of product, isn't it? That's why I bought it. I'm a huge sucker for those value sets, though I'm really hesitant to buy them any more because the quality tends to be watered down.

This palette was like that- allow me to explain.

First thing I need to discuss is the packaging. It's HORRIBLE. This has to be the worst palette design in history and I'll explain why. Let's start from the top. There's a lid flap (the part with the jewels) that has no clip or lock or magnet or any sort of securing mechanism. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but this palette has an obnoxious sliding drawer that opens/falls out every time you move the damn palette. This caused me to put a big gouge in one of the blushes before I even got a chance to use it. I hate that damn drawer so much that I kinda want to break it off and put it in its own palette.

The second design flaw is the top layer of eyeshadows. They are each on flaps that open like wings, but they're not entirely solid. This can cause the edges of the flaps to dig in to the shadows below, causing breakage and gouges and basically a giant powdery mess. The side flaps don't stay open very well while you're trying to use the matte shadows, which is also an annoyance. They also tend to flip out to the sides whenever you tilt the palette- there's nothing to secure them so once the lid is open you have a big floppy, flappy box of crazy with powder flying everywhere.

The palette itself is so floppy, large and unwieldy that it is almost impossible to use without scratching or breaking or accidentally putting your finger in something. It's too big to comfortably set on a vanity and use all the items- fully extended with the lid open and blush and gloss drawers open it's over two feet long. The fact that you can't stop that obnoxious mother effing blush drawer from opening is sure to cause uncontrollable rage by the second time you try picking up the palette. You may be overcome with the urge to throw the palette against a wall and maybe smash it with a fire extinguisher or shoot at it a few times.

Absurdly bad design aside, the products inside are hit-or-miss. I found most of the shadows to be rather chalky with fairly poor payoff and pigmentation. Some shades are better than others. The mattes were especially streaky and chalky but most of the shimmers were acceptable. The glosses are hard and sticky and come in really odd colors like brown and salmon and off-white. The gloss (or is it lipstick?) formula doesn't resemble any Tarte lip product I've ever used and they're not scented or flavored. The blushes are good and quite pigmented but they're also extremely shimmery and powdery.

The colors of the shadows are really great. The selection is amazing and the complexity of some of the shades is just spectacular. The problem is that they're not the regular Tarte shadow formula.

I have two other Tarte palettes- the A List palette which is the normal Tarte formula and the We Wish You Wealth palette which also feels the same as normal Tarte formula. It seems like this Treasure Chest palette was watered down in quality in order to justify such a low price. Tarte eyeshadows are usually silky and creamy, a lot like Stila or Urban Decay's shadow texture. The ones in this palette are harder, more powdery feeling and not as pigmented.

This may seem like a pointless review now that the product is unavailable, but I wanted to share my experience with it and see if maybe someone else felt the same way about it. This really would have been a great inexpensive palette if that stupid blush drawer didn't slide out every time you touched the palette. The packaging is beautiful, the colors are sexy and fun- it's the kind of palette you want to leave out on your vanity because it's so beautiful to look at. Makes me wonder if they even tested the drawer design before that manufactured it...

Okay, next makeup review I post has to be something I'm super in love with.

MAC Liquid Lurex Lipstick

This is one of the coolest, weirdest most gorgeous lipsticks in my collection. It's one of the Dazzle formula lipsticks from the Digi-Pops collection from this past summer. I love it.

Isn't that crazy? It looks like it's yellow-green with gold, white and copper. It is, actually. But it doesn't look as mucus-like as it sounds when it's on your lips...

The yellow-green part just becomes a sheer tint that mellows the red tones in my lips and the overall look is just frosty light gold with copper and pink glitter. It's a little too frosty for me on its own so sometimes I put gloss over it to tone down the white-frostiness.

Best of all, it has that amazing MAC lipstick vanilla scent. That's one of my favorite smells in the whole world (next to freshly ground coffee beans) and sometimes I wear MAC lip products only to smell the scent of them... I wish I had a perfume that smelled like it! I have about eighty bajillion vanilla perfumes and none of them have that same sweet, smooth vanilla of a MAC lipstick.
